Still feeling like a new teacher...

My second summer as a full time teacher is quickly coming to a close, and soon I will be entering my third year of teaching. Some say this may be the magical year where I finally figure out if I'm cut out to be a teacher or not, but I really feel like that will be a lifelong question.

Flipped Classroom - I am going to flip my PAP Precalculus course! I am very excited for the potential discussion and activities in class that we can now do. I'm contemplating whether or not I should also flip my on-level Geometry course. I will probably make this decision in a few weeks.

Resources using: Schoology.com, MyOpenMath.com, Possibly Educanon.com. I have not yet decided on the way I'm going to record my videos, maybe I'll do some mixing and matching on various platforms to see what I like best.

I'm really looking forward to flipping my class and possibly creating resources for other teachers who want to flip their class but are unsure how to take the first steps. Follow my blog this school year for my trials and tribulations!

Thanks,

    1. Hi Julie,
I see that you're using myopenmath and schoology, and I would like to do the same. Are you integrating myopenmath into schoology as an external tool?

any guidance or resources you could provide me for getting started?

      Thank you!!
      Adam

    1. Hello!

I just typed out an awesomely long response but my phone apparently wasn't a fan.

I suggest using MyOpenMath and Schoology with upperclassmen, or at least with highly motivated lowerclassmen. I loved the fact that my students increased their level of communication with me and each other through the built-in features in both websites.

For MyOpenMath, I pulled premade content that was available through the content libraries. I spent too much time trying to make my own problems and code it, but I decided that those questions could just be done in class. I enjoyed using MyOpenMath with a flipped classroom because I was able to be around when students did their practice in there. There was a learning curve on how to input answers correctly.

With Schoology, I found that most of the features worked fine, and submitting assignments through there made my life much easier. The tests were giving me problems though because images don't consistently load on the student end. If you make a test, don't use any images. I also was able to import Examview banks to use, but it was a convulated method.

    2. I never was able to get MyOpenMath and Schoology to work together through the external tool or integrating it, so I would make the assignment in MyOpenMath and just take the link for it and paste it into an assignment in Schoology.

  3. Hi Julie,
Thanks for your quick and generous response. A couple of questions:

    1) did you keep track of 2 separate gradebooks then, one in schoology and one in MyOpenMath?

This was the main reason I thought to use the LTI (integrate MOM (funny acronym) into schoology). But it does seem very confusing.

    2) why schoology with upperclassmen vs. lower? did you run into some difficulties with lowerclassmen?

    Thanks again!

    1. There were gradebooks in both, but I told the kids that they could use it to see an individual assignment but not their overall grade. My school requires the use of a specific gradebook system and I couldn't link it with Schoology because I was not using the Enterprise version, so I just took the grades from the assignments I needed and put them in the gradebook I needed.

My lowerclassmen didn't have the diligence nor the computer skills to use it, and it was too much time to keep reteaching how to input answers. My lowerclassmen haven't used the internet like that before and it was hard being the only teacher using it for thise kids.
